My Interview With Radio New Zealand on the Internet, Privacy, and Social Networking

Yesterday I did an interview on Radio New Zealand’s Nine-To-Noon program. We mainly discussed social networks, including the flaws with Facebook and how new startups could perhaps throw them from their throne. Privacy was also discussed a lot, and I also talk about my aims for the future (and why I’m heading to Asia).

Just thought I’d post the link here in case some of you were interested, and also because I’d love to hear feedback on some of the things we talked about in the interview. Thanks!

Very interesting listen, I have always been interested in the likes of Social Media, e-commerce and generally how the internet has changed the paradigm of business – but always thought I was too young/busy to become fully immersed. Hearing how although you are 16 (like myself) and balancing entrepreneurship with studies has got me very interested. Though I read a lot, the majority of it is on the internet, various articles ranging from science, history, politics and politics; but approaching is a twelve week summer holiday which I would like to make the most of. Do you have any books for my summer reading that you suggest I read? Cheers.

Just listened to the interview – you spoke so well! I’m so excited for you to meet the like-minded entrants in Singapore too. July 4th – not too far away now. The fact that this all came from that “future” blog post you wrote inspires me to keep going with my blog :)

Hi Michael, we listened to the interview, through the computer, in the school library- you spoke very well. You may be interested in Granovetter’s strength of weak ties theory; also homophily seems to be the concept you describe, the tendency of people to associate with others who are the same as them. If you want some of Granovetter’s papers come and see me in the library.

Hi Abdullah, thanks for your comment! I definitely think that if you’re passionate enough about technology then you can balance it with school or whatever else you have on in your life. It’s the same with anything – passion makes things possible.

I recommend: Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell, Fooled by Randomness by Nassim Taleb, Every Bastard Says No by Justine Troy.

Flick me an email sometime with more info about what kind of books you’re into and I’ll let you know some others I’ve enjoyed!
